10 on the Tee with Neal Shipley

10 on the Tee with Neal Shipley

Whether dominating on the course or sharing his love for Waffle House, Neal’s relatable personality makes him someone fans can't help but connect with.

By Chloe Gruszynski

We had the pleasure of sitting down with one of the most relatable professionals in golf today, Neal Shipley. Shipley first grabbed the public's attention during his impressive run at the 2024 Masters, where he not only claimed Low Amateur honors but also had the unforgettable experience of playing alongside Tiger Woods on Sunday. Since then, he's become a standout on the Netflix series Full Swing and has captured hearts with his quirky yet grounded personality, making waves in press conferences with his authentic charm.

Favorite food at the Masters?

'Oh, the peach ice cream sandwich, for sure, is probably my favorite.'

Favorite Masters Tournament tradition?

'The Honorary Starters Ceremony. Historically, it's been Jack Nicholas, Gary Player, and Arnold Palmer for most of my life. I always made a point of getting up on Thursday and watching that.'.

Favorite hole at Augusta National?

'The 3rd hole. I played it really well. It's such a cool design, where the strategy on what you do changes a lot based on where the pin location is.'

Hardest hole at Augusta National?

'Number 11. The week we were playing it was just absolutely insane. It played like a par 5 two of the four days...it's a 500 yard hole, and we were playing it into a good 25-30 mile an hour breeze. And I vividly remember playing with Mike Weir, and he absolutely crushed a drive, and it maybe went 240 yards, and then he laid up with the three wood. And then wedged it to the hole, I didn't hit the fairway, but I probably would have done the same thing.'

Hole No. 3: 'Flowering Peach'

Hole No. 11: 'White Dogwood'

What's something that people wouldn't know about Augusta National without being there?

'How welcoming they are to their guests. They make you feel very comfortable on property. I think a lot of people would think that Augusta is very stuffy but it's the complete opposite of like, country club stuffy. People are super friendly and employees are amazing, and they treat every guest like they’re family.'

What's one piece of advice you'd give to amateurs playing in the Masters Tournament for the first time?

'I think one of my favorite memories was on Thursday, the walk from the clubhouse to the first tee as I'm getting ready to tee off. And it was that moment when it hit me that I'm actually about to go play in the Masters for the first time and realize a childhood dream...I think for sure, the most emotional I've been before playing a tournament without a doubt.'

Favorite course you've played?

'Oakmont Country Club, for sure...I grew up caddying there, and I think that it's the hardest golf course in the world, but at the same time, it's fair, yeah? To have a golf course that is both extremely difficult but very fair, it's hard to get that combination right.'

What was your experience like on Full Swing?

'Full Swing is awesome. The people who film and shoot the show are so much fun. The amount of laughs we had that didn't make it on camera or onto the show were countless. There was one car ride we did, they did a drive in with me during a tournament in the summertime, and we didn't stop laughing for the entire 25 minute car ride. And (it) rendered all of that film useless because it was just us, like, f*ing around in the car. It was so funny.'

Shipley's ball marker that he used at the 2025 Valspar Championship. It's a reference to a scene in the first episode of Netflix's Full Swing Season 3, where he revealed some of the descriptors that he has acquired while at Ohio State, including "first team all fridge" and "body by Waffle House."

How has your life changed since the Masters?

'Yeah, I think I'm just grateful for a lot of the opportunities that have come my way since then. You know, I think if you asked me before the Masters, like, a year before the Masters one, I probably never thought I was going to be playing in a Masters as an amateur. That was always a dream of mine, but if I was being honest with myself, there's probably no chance that I'll play Augusta as an amateur. So, like, within a year, that's changed.

And then, you know, I go on to have a summer where I play in eight PGA tour events, I'm low amateur at the US Open at Pinehurst, one of 13 amateurs to ever win both in the same year. You know, it's something that, entering that type of fraternity, where there's only 13 guys in the history of the amateur game to ever do it, and that's just so special. And, you know, I don't consider myself to be that special. I feel like I'm just very normal.

So it's just reflecting on it. It's crazy that all that happened, and then I've been able to achieve all that and I think it just goes to show how a lot of hard work and dedication can can take you a long ways, and when you're doing the little things each day, you don't really realize how much better you're getting in the big picture of things.'
