Tragedy to triumph: the story of Northern Michigan's newest upscale private club: High Pointe Golf Club

By Matt Fernandez (some photos by Noah Jurik)

Backstory

It started back in the late 1980’s with a young Tom Doak eager for his first solo gig designing a golf course. Doak went on to build the original High Pointe Golf Club: an 18-hole public course with great bones and iconic greens.

Unfortunately, High Pointe closed its doors during the 2008 recession and was sold off to a hops farm. Shortly after, half the course was turned into growing hops, while the other half sat vacant for over 15 years. Mother nature took over, but the loop was still there, covered in thick growth, with remnants left from its past.

Boots on the Ground

In 2020, we put boots on the ground and had our good friend Noah Jurik interview Tom Doak at the then abandoned High Pointe. Doak gave Noah the full tour and knew every
inch of the land like he had just built it. You could feel his connection to the property and the memories once made there. Doak may have not mentioned it out loud, but you
could sense his longing to have another crack at High Pointe, the place where he first launched his career so many years ago. A few years later Doak would get his chance.

Grand Vision

A man with a grand vision came along: Rod Trump. Rod envisioned another world-class golf course right here in Northern Michigan. He wanted to resurrect High Pointe the right way, making it even better than what it was previously. The goal was, and still is, to be the ‘High Pointe’ of golf, taking notes and tips from top clubs all over the world. With a semi-blank canvas on the same beautiful plot of rolling land, Doak and Trump set out to revitalize High Pointe and build a golfer’s dream club.

The past two summers we were lucky enough to witness the build, seeing the course during its early days. The High Pointe team worked fast, yet precise, finishing the course build in less than 2 years. Watching the team dig out deep bunkers and build contoured greens was a treat to witness. Tip of the cap to the entire HP team for their tremendous efforts in building out the loop and vision.

Full Circle

This past Fall we had our full circle moment when we were invited out to play the new High Pointe. Seeing it all come together and having that full circle moment made this experience truly unbelievable.

At the time we looped HP, the ‘back nine’ (holes 8-16) was the only side open for play, so we looped it twice and loved every single minute of it. From what we saw, and everything we are hearing, this course will be too good not to be one of the best clubs in the country. Everything was, and will be, top class. Nothing will be overlooked, even down to the wood used in building out the Pro Shop.

The Loop

We’ll leave this to your imagination, or you head over to their Instagram (highpointegolf) for a full course tour. But I’ll say this: High Pointe is the perfect mix of holes, offering hard par 4’s, gettable par 4’s, tough par 3’s, creative par 5’s and everything in-between. Every hole is uniquely its own and no two holes feel even remotely the same.

Final Thoughts

Thank you to Rod Trump and the amazing team at High Pointe for building this masterpiece. It was an honor to see the build and even more special to be able to loop it. High Pointe will be remarkable when all is said and done. Here’s to another great club joining the ever-growing list of Michigan greats. Here’s to High Pointe.
